How to keep a shared list from getting wrecked

Every long-lived shared list eventually meets its disaster: a toddler with a phone, an uncle who “tidied up,” a mis-tap that deletes the section you spent an evening building. On a fully open list, anyone can fix anything — but anyone can also break everything. Here’s how owned lists change that math.

Turn off the dangerous verbs
The damage on a shared list comes from a short list of verbs: edit, delete, move. On an owned list each is a per-feature switch for visitors. Leave check off and claim on — the interactions you actually want — and turn off deletion and restructuring. A mis-tap can no longer take out a section, because visitors can’t delete sections at all.
Deletes you can undo
On a classic anonylist list, deleting is permanent — the honest price of having no accounts. Deleting a list you own is different: it goes dark for everyone but sits in your account, restorable at the same address whenever you want it back. Owned lists are also never removed by the inactivity cleanup that can eventually reap abandoned free lists.
An owner and admins, not a free-for-all
You own the list; the people who help you run it become admins by email. Everyone else interacts exactly as much as you’ve allowed. If the group’s needs change, loosen the switches — changes apply live. And if you ever want out of the ownership model, release the list and it returns to being an ordinary free anonylist list.
What this doesn’t protect against
Whatever you leave switched on. If visitors can check items off, they can check the wrong one (unchecking is one tap). If they can claim sign-ups, they can claim badly. Permissions remove catastrophes, not typos — the small stuff stays as human as ever.

- Can someone with the link delete my whole list?
- Not on an owned list. Only the owner can delete it — and even that is undoable from the owner’s account page.
- What if I make a mistake myself?
- Deleting an owned list is reversible: restore it from your account at the same address. Individual row deletions by you or admins remain immediate, so delete with the same care as ever.
- Do the people using the list need anything?
- No. Visitors just use the link. Admins sign in with a free Google account; only the owner subscribes.
- Can I go back to a normal list?
- Yes — release it. It becomes an ordinary anonylist list again: no owner, no admins, everything open.
